The victims, identified as Leila Mohamed, 41, and her 15-year-old daughter, Zilan Sino, both of Columbus, Ohio, were traveling with family when the crash occurred. Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood confirmed that both were pronounced dead at 4:22 a.m. at the crash site near mile marker 71, close to the Bell School Road exit.
The Incident
Authorities responded to the crash after Illinois State Police, the Brimfield Fire Department, and BYE Ambulance were alerted to the scene. Mohamed and Sino were passengers in a 2005 Toyota Sienna XLE minivan traveling westbound on I-74. For reasons yet to be determined, the vehicle veered off the road and into the center median.
The minivan crossed into the eastbound lanes, eventually entering a grassy area. It struck a tree and caught fire. Of the five occupants in the vehicle, three managed to escape before the fire consumed the vehicle. Tragically, Mohamed and Sino were unable to get out and died at the scene.
