Eloi Canals Obituary, Death – A tragic crash in Omaha on Friday morning has claimed the life of a 25-year-old man, and police have cited a semi driver for driving under the influence of drugs.
The collision occurred shortly after 8 a.m. near the intersection of 16th Street and Pershing Drive. Investigators determined that the driver of a Toyota SUV, identified as Eloi Canals Morales, was traveling west on Pershing Drive when he failed to stop at a stop sign at 16th Street. His vehicle struck the trailer of a southbound semi.
Emergency responders transported Morales to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The driver of the semi, 49-year-old Azizi Merriweather, was found to be under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. Omaha police cited Merriweather for driving under the influence and for operating a vehicle with an invalid commercial driver’s license (CDL). Merriweather was uninjured in the incident.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
