According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the truck veered off the road and hit the tree with such force that it caused the right side of the truck’s cab to peel back all the way to the cargo box. This violent impact led to the ejection of two passengers, despite the apparent use of seat belts. Hill, who was sitting in the front right seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Trenner, sitting in the rear right seat, was critically injured and rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the truck, who suffered minor injuries, told law enforcement that he was traveling at 65 mph in the number one lane when he decided to move to the number two lane. He reportedly misjudged the maneuver and drifted too far, causing the truck to leave the road and travel across the dirt shoulder before crashing into the tree.
