Cody Haffner Obituary, Death – A man who was fatally shot by California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers in Lathrop has been identified as 33-year-old Cody Haffner of Tracy, according to the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The incident began around 11 p.m. on Wednesday night when CHP officers responded to reports of a traffic crash on southbound Interstate 5, just north of State Route 120 in Lathrop. According to dispatch audio, the involved vehicle was a Corvette, and the driver was allegedly firing a weapon at other passing vehicles.
When officers arrived at the scene, they encountered Haffner armed with a gun. During the confrontation, CHP officers opened fire. Haffner was struck and later transported to a nearby hospital, where he died the following morning, Thursday.
Authorities have not yet disclosed specific details about what may have caused the crash or what exactly led to the shooting. The CHP’s Valley Division Investigative Services Unit is currently overseeing the case, along with assistance from the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the full circumstances surrounding both the vehicle crash and the officer-involved shooting.
