Rachel Garcia Obtuary, Death – Authorities have identified the victim in a fatal stabbing that took place Wednesday night in South Omaha. Omaha Police Department (OPD) officials confirmed Friday morning that 46-year-old Rachel Garcia was the woman killed in the incident.
The suspect, identified as 51-year-old Anita Hernandez, was arrested Thursday and booked into jail on charges of second-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
Incident Details
According to OPD, officers responded to a report of a stabbing just before 9 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of South 7th and Bancroft Street. When they arrived at the scene, they found Garcia suffering from stab wounds. Emergency responders transported her to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Suspect’s Account
An affidavit detailing Hernandez’s account of events states that she told police she was documenting construction work in the area when Garcia confronted her. The situation escalated into a physical altercation.
During the struggle, Hernandez reportedly retrieved a pocket knife she regularly carried. She claimed she did not remember stabbing Garcia but recalled hearing Garcia exclaim that she had been stabbed. Hernandez also noticed blood on her hands afterward.
Arrest and Investigation
Hernandez was taken into custody at the scene without incident. Investigators continue to work on the case to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
