Shawn Twomey Obituary, Death Cause: Motorcyclist killed in I-95 Stonington crash tied to bank robbery, police say.

Shawn Twomey Obituary, Death Cause – A man who died in a motorcycle accident on Interstate 95 South in Stonington on Wednesday has been linked to a bank robbery that occurred earlier that day, according to local authorities.
Stonington police reported that the robbery took place at approximately 11:20 a.m. at the Chelsea Groton Savings Bank located in the Pawcatuck neighborhood. During the incident, a suspect entered the bank, suggested that they were armed, and escaped with an unspecified amount of cash. No details were released about whether an actual weapon was seen.
Eyewitnesses at the scene told police that the suspect fled on a blue motorcycle, heading northbound from the bank.
Roughly ten minutes after the robbery, a serious crash involving a motorcycle and a tractor-trailer was reported on the southbound side of Interstate 95. Emergency responders arrived at the crash site shortly after 11:30 a.m. and found that the motorcyclist, later identified as 52-year-old Shawn Twomey of New Haven, had died from his injuries at the scene.
Connecticut State Police confirmed Twomey’s identity and stated that he was the only person involved on the motorcycle. Stonington police have since confirmed that Twomey is the same individual who was involved in the bank robbery earlier that morning. The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement officials are working to determine the full details of both incidents and any possible motives behind the robbery.
Authorities are now seeking the public’s assistance in gathering more information. They are asking anyone who may have witnessed the bank robbery, saw the motorcycle traveling in the area, or witnessed the crash on I-95 to come forward. Individuals with relevant information are encouraged to contact Stonington police or reach out directly to Trooper Timothy Wengloski at (860) 848-6500. Tips can also be submitted via email at timothy.wengloski@ct.gov.
At this time, officials have not released any additional details regarding whether the stolen money was recovered or if Twomey had any accomplices. It remains unclear if law enforcement was actively pursuing the suspect at the time of the crash.
This case has drawn attention due to the unusual sequence of events that unfolded within a very short time frame — a bank robbery followed almost immediately by a fatal crash involving the suspect. Both the Stonington Police Department and Connecticut State Police continue to investigate the case to piece together a more complete picture of what transpired and to determine whether any further criminal activity or planning was involved.
Further updates may be provided by the authorities as new information becomes available.
