Stonington police reported that the robbery took place at approximately 11:20 a.m. at the Chelsea Groton Savings Bank located in the Pawcatuck neighborhood. Eyewitnesses at the scene told police that the suspect fled on a blue motorcycle, heading northbound from the bank.

Emergency responders arrived at the crash site shortly after 11:30 a.m. and found that the motorcyclist, later identified as 52-year-old Shawn Twomey of New Haven, had died from his injuries at the scene.

Connecticut State Police confirmed Twomey’s identity and stated that he was the only person involved on the motorcycle. Stonington police have since confirmed that Twomey is the same individual who was involved in the bank robbery earlier that morning.
