The deadly incident occurred on Interstate 10 near the Oak Harbor exit, where Sgt. Candies was attempting to deploy a spike strip to stop a fleeing suspect’s vehicle. As the high-speed chase continued, the suspect’s car struck Candies, fatally injuring him.
The pursuit began earlier on Brownswitch Road when a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Instead of pulling over, the suspect sped away, leading authorities on a dangerous chase across multiple parishes. Law enforcement officers pursued the suspect for several miles, trying to prevent further danger to the public.
The chase ultimately ended in Orleans Parish, near the intersection of I-10 and Crowder, where the suspect’s vehicle collided with a New Orleans Police Department unit. At that point, officers were able to bring the suspect into custody.
