According to investigators, the crash happened when Logan Sauer, driving a Honda CR-V, was traveling in the middle lane of I-485. At one point, he moved into the right lane and struck a Chrysler minivan driven by Samuel Holmes. The impact forced both vehicles off the right side of the highway and into a parked tractor-trailer.

Sauer, who was the sole occupant of his vehicle, died at the scene. Inside the Chrysler minivan were six people, five of whom were fatally injured in the crash. The deceased included two young children and their relatives. One surviving passenger, a 16-year-old girl, was seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The driver of the parked tractor-trailer was not injured in the incident. Authorities noted that the truck was unoccupied at the time of the impact and was legally parked on the shoulder.
