Sakawn Straw Arrested; Murder suspect taken into custody in Springfield.

Sakawn Straw Arrested – Authorities in Springfield have arrested a suspect in connection with a deadly double shooting that occurred earlier this month on Orange Street. On Thursday morning, 32-year-old Sakawn Straw, a resident of Springfield, was taken into custody at a home located on the 0-100 block of Revere Street.

The arrest was carried out around 6 a.m. by officers from several units, including the Springfield Police Homicide Unit, the Emergency Services Unit (ESU), and the Warrant Apprehension Unit, according to Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh.

Straw has been charged with multiple serious offenses, including murder. The charges stem from a shooting incident that happened on July 11 around 10:30 p.m. Officers had responded to a call reporting a shooting victim on the 200 block of Orange Street. Upon arrival, they discovered two men inside an apartment suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both victims were transported to Baystate Medical Center for treatment. One of the victims, identified as 54-year-old Eric Wilson, later died from his injuries. The second man, whose identity has not been released, sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.

Following the incident, Springfield police launched an investigation led by the Homicide Unit under Captain Duda. They worked in collaboration with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit, led by District Attorney Anthony Gulluni. Through their investigation, detectives identified Sakawn Straw as the primary suspect involved in the shooting.

As a result of the investigation, Straw now faces a number of charges including:

  • Murder
  • Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon

Straw was scheduled to appear in Springfield District Court for his arraignment later on Thursday.

The Springfield Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have not yet disclosed any potential motives for the violence or the relationship between the suspect and the victims.

This arrest marks a significant development in the case, bringing some progress in the pursuit of justice for the victims, especially for the family of Eric Wilson, who lost his life in the shooting. Police are urging anyone with additional information regarding the case to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.

Officials also continue to emphasize the dangers posed by illegal firearms in the community and remain committed to removing such threats through targeted enforcement and thorough investigative work.
