Ricky Shannon Obituary, Death: Mount Joy shooting leaves 1 dead, 3 injured; suspect and 19-year-old woman later killed in shootout
Ricky Shannon Obituary, Death – Pennsylvania State Police provided new information on a series of connected shootings that unfolded early Friday morning across multiple counties. During a 1 p.m. press conference, State Police Lt. Adam Reed and Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo shared known details about the incidents, which spanned from Mount Joy in Lancaster County to Dauphin County.
The situation began around 4:15 a.m. when authorities were called to the Sassafras Terrace apartments in Mount Joy, where four family members were found shot, one fatally. Police soon identified the shooter as 22-year-old Ricky Shannon from Altoona, who had driven away in a pickup truck. A pursuit was initiated after police quickly located Shannon’s vehicle on the road.
It was revealed that the victims in the Mount Joy apartment were family members of a 19-year-old woman who was with Shannon. Both Shannon and the woman had filed Protection from Abuse orders (PFAs) against each other within days of each filing. How Shannon and the woman were related remains unclear, though their relationship appears to have been tumultuous.
During the pursuit, which involved Pennsylvania State Police from Lancaster and extended into Dauphin County, Shannon was reported to have crashed into multiple cars and even sped on the wrong side of the road. After about 40 minutes, officers performed a pit maneuver to stop his truck on Route 147. At that point, Shannon reportedly opened fire at the officers, hitting several police vehicles and nearly striking troopers. This prompted the officers to return fire.
When police approached the truck to provide medical aid, they discovered that the 19-year-old woman was also inside and had been shot. Due to the truck’s tinted windows, officers could not initially see her in the vehicle. Despite officers’ efforts to provide emergency care, both Shannon and the woman succumbed to their injuries.
District Attorney Chardo emphasized that this investigation is in its early stages, with authorities currently reviewing body and dashcam footage to clarify the events that led to the shootings and pursuit. No identities have been released yet for the family members who were shot in the apartment.
State Police closed Route 147 between Mountain Road and Exit 22 to allow for a thorough investigation. It remains unclear what led to the dispute between Shannon and the woman, and whether they were involved in any recent altercations prior to filing PFAs against each other.
