Mark R. Wallum Obituary, Death Cause; One killed, three injured in Franklin County car crash

Mark R. Wallum Obituary, Death Cause – The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is investigating a deadly crash that occurred Sunday morning near Pasco, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

According to WSP, the collision happened on State Route 395, about eight miles north of Pasco, at the intersection with Crestloch. Troopers said two vehicles were involved—one traveling southbound and the other heading northbound on SR-395.

Preliminary findings show that the southbound vehicle attempted to turn left onto eastbound Crestloch. During the turn, it was struck by the northbound vehicle traveling in the same area of the roadway. The force of the impact caused extensive damage, and both vehicles were declared total losses.

Inside the southbound vehicle were three occupants. Tragically, one of them, identified as 76-year-old Mark R. Wallum, died at the scene from his injuries. The two other passengers in the same car survived but sustained injuries. They were transported by emergency responders to Kadlec Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The driver of the northbound vehicle was also injured in the crash and taken to the same hospital. Authorities confirmed that all individuals involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision, which likely helped prevent further fatalities.

WSP also noted that there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol playing a role in the crash. Investigators emphasized that impairment has been ruled out, shifting focus instead to the sequence of actions leading to the left turn and the collision that followed.

Troopers said the crash serves as a reminder of the dangers at intersections, particularly along busy highways where vehicles often travel at higher speeds. Even a momentary misjudgment when attempting a turn can result in severe consequences.

Emergency crews were on-site for hours to secure the scene, treat the injured, and investigate the collision. Traffic in the area was disrupted while responders worked, with vehicles diverted until the roadway was cleared. Both cars were heavily damaged and later removed from the site.

As part of the investigation, the WSP Crash Reconstruction Unit is reviewing witness statements, roadway evidence, and vehicle conditions to piece together a clearer understanding of how the incident unfolded. Officials have not yet released details on whether charges or citations may result from the crash, noting that the investigation remains active.

The death of Mark R. Wallum has left his loved ones grieving the sudden loss. At 76, Wallum’s life was cut short in an instant, underscoring the tragic impact of roadway crashes on families and communities.

WSP extended condolences to the victim’s family and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring roadway safety. They also encouraged drivers to remain alert, use caution when making turns across busy routes, and always wear seatbelts, as they remain the most effective protection in serious collisions.

The investigation continues, and authorities expect to release additional updates as more information becomes available.
