Keun Hoon Lee Obituary, Death: Van driver dies after overturning on Franconia-Springfield Parkway.

Keun Hoon Lee Obituary, Death – Fairfax County police are investigating whether speed played a role in a fatal crash on Franconia-Springfield Parkway last Friday, January 3. Officers responded to the scene near Bonniemill Lane in Springfield at 8:06 p.m. after receiving reports of a single-vehicle crash involving a 2016 Ford van.

A 911 call indicated that the driver had been ejected from the vehicle after it crashed, and responding emergency personnel arrived to find the van on its side. CPR was immediately administered to the driver, later identified by the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) as 89-year-old Keun Hoon Lee of Alexandria. Despite the efforts of first responders, Lee was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the incident, the eastbound lanes of Franconia-Springfield Parkway were closed for several hours while police conducted their investigation. Initial findings suggest that Lee was traveling east on the parkway when his van left the roadway, flipped over, and ended up on an embankment. Investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the crash, though speed is a key factor under review. Authorities also noted that alcohol is not believed to have contributed to the crash.

Lee’s death marks the first fatal vehicle accident in Fairfax County this year. In 2024, there were 52 fatal crashes in the county, based on preliminary data from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

The investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing, with police looking closely at speed as a possible contributing factor.
