Judith A. David Obituary, Death- An early-morning house fire in Danville tragically claimed the life of 85-year-old Judith A. David on Wednesday despite firefighters’ efforts to rescue her.

Fire Breaks Out, Three Escape

At 3:17 a.m., the Danville Fire Department responded to a call about a fire engulfing a one-story wood-frame home in the 300 block of North Fletcher Street. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy flames and thick smoke pouring from the house.

Three individuals who had managed to escape met the firefighters outside and informed them that a fourth person—Mrs. David—was still inside.

Rescue Attempts Blocked by Intense Heat

Firefighters from two companies attempted to enter the house to rescue David, but the extreme heat forced them back. A third crew tried entering from another section of the home but was again overwhelmed by the conditions.

Firefighters used multiple handlines to battle the blaze and gain control of the fire. Once conditions improved, crews re-entered the house and located David, who had succumbed to the fire.

Fire Aftermath and Investigation

The Vermilion County Coroner’s Office was notified, and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday. Meanwhile, the three survivors were taken to a local hospital for treatment, and a family pet also perished in the fire.

Firefighters discovered collapsing floors, making it too dangerous to enter the structure. An excavator was brought in to demolish the home while crews extinguished remaining hot spots.

Investigators determined that there were no working smoke detectors in the house. The estimated property loss is $170,000.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Response

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting the Danville Fire Department in the investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Ryan Allison at 217-431-2350.

In response to the tragedy, the American Red Cross has been called in to assist the surviving family members. Fire officials continue to stress the importance of working smoke detectors in every home to prevent future tragedies.
