The Dallas County medical examiner confirmed that the deceased were Joyce Buenger Martin, 89, and James Alan Martin, 96. Joyce’s cause of death was ruled an accident, according to a report issued on Sunday, while James’ autopsy results are still pending.
The tragic fire took place on December 17 at approximately 2:33 p.m. when DeSoto firefighters were dispatched to the Martins’ home on Canyon Ridge Drive. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the house fully engulfed in flames. Due to the intensity of the blaze, firefighters, with assistance from Duncanville fire crews and DeSoto police, determined the house was unsafe to enter.
The firefighters focused their efforts on containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to neighboring homes. Thanks to their quick response, the blaze was brought under control, and no other homes were damaged in the incident.
In a statement, the City of DeSoto expressed its deep sorrow over the loss of the Martins and extended condolences to their family. “As a community, we stand together in support as we mourn this loss,” the release read.
