The Jetta then attempted to cross K-26 but failed to yield to a southbound tow truck traveling on the highway. As a result, the two vehicles collided.

Joseph Reed was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, while his 73-year-old female passenger sustained serious injuries. She was promptly taken to a hospital in Joplin, Missouri, for medical treatment. The 23-year-old driver of the tow truck, who was alone in the vehicle, was unharmed in the collision.
