The Binghamton Fire Department responded to a second-alarm fire at 1 Court Street around 9:40 p.m. The building was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. As crews worked to control the blaze, an urgent Mayday call was issued for three firefighters trapped inside the burning structure.

Firefighter Killed in the Line of Duty

Two of the trapped firefighters were successfully rescued and transported to Wilson Hospital, where they remain in stable condition. Tragically, a third firefighter was also pulled from the burning building but was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The fallen firefighter has been identified as 40-year-old John R. Gaudet, an 11-year veteran of the Binghamton Fire Department. According to a press release, Gaudet lost his life when a wall collapsed on him while he was battling the flames.

Community and Official Reactions

Binghamton Fire Chief Alan Gardiner expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling it every fire department’s worst nightmare. “The Binghamton Fire Department is grieving the loss of one of our own. Our prayers are with Firefighter Gaudet’s family and loved ones,” Gardiner stated.

Mayor Jared Kraham also addressed the tragedy, calling it an “unspeakable loss” for the city. He urged the community to offer prayers for Gaudet’s family and the entire fire department.

Ongoing Investigation

The scene remains active, with investigators working to determine the cause of the fire. Heavy machinery is being used to clear debris as part of the ongoing investigation. The Court Street Bridge is closed to traffic, and authorities have not provided a timeline for when it will reopen.
