John Joseph Sweeney Obituary, Death News – Lehigh County authorities have released the identity of a motorcyclist killed in a crash on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

John Joseph Sweeney, 50, of Bristol, was confirmed as the victim, according to Lehigh County Coroner Daniel Buglio. Sweeney was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which happened around 9:09 a.m. on Sunday in Washington Township, Lehigh County.

According to Pennsylvania State Police Troop T Pocono Station, a 24-year-old woman from Perth Amboy, New Jersey, was driving a 2019 Honda HRV southbound in the northbound lanes when she collided with two motorcycles from a group of six riders.

Sweeney, who was operating a 2016 Harley-Davidson, was fatally injured in the crash. Another motorcyclist, a 24-year-old man from Bristol, was also hurt. Emergency medical personnel from Northern Valley Emergency Medical Services treated him at the scene before he was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest.

The driver of the Honda HRV sustained minor injuries in the collision.

Following the crash, northbound traffic on the highway was rerouted at the Lehigh Valley exit, and access from State Route 22 to the northbound lanes was temporarily closed. However, the southbound lanes remained open, state police said.

The Pennsylvania State Police Troop T Pocono Station and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office are conducting an ongoing investigation into the fatal incident.
