Jimmy Jones Obituary, Death; Coroner IDs Dillon man fatally shot by police after standoff.

Jimmy Jones Obituary, Death – A 52-year-old man from Dillon, South Carolina, was shot and killed by law enforcement following an extended standoff, according to the Dillon County Coroner’s Office. The man, identified as Jimmy Jones, died during the confrontation on Sunday, and his body is being sent to the Medical University of South Carolina for a full autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of his death.

Authorities said the standoff occurred on Joann Branch Road in the Lake View area. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation at the request of the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office to ensure an impartial review of the incident.

According to official reports, the situation escalated when deputies responded to the residence and encountered Jones, who reportedly aimed a firearm at them and made threats to shoot. After this initial encounter, Jones barricaded himself inside the home, prompting law enforcement to attempt a peaceful resolution.

As the standoff continued, officers with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) SWAT team were called in to assist local law enforcement in executing a search warrant. Negotiators worked extensively to deescalate the situation, attempting to convince Jones to surrender. Despite their efforts, authorities said Jones fired multiple shots from within the home during the standoff.

In response to the gunfire, law enforcement returned fire, striking Jones. He was later pronounced dead. Officials have not yet released the name of the officer or officers who fired their weapons during the exchange.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further details about the timeline of events or the nature of the threats made by Jones have not yet been released. Authorities emphasized that a thorough review will be conducted, including forensic analysis and statements from all officers involved, to determine how the incident unfolded.

The case has drawn attention due to the length of the standoff and the circumstances surrounding the use of force. Law enforcement officials reiterated that their primary goal was a peaceful resolution and that the use of deadly force was only employed after the suspect allegedly fired at officers.

Sheriff’s departments and investigative agencies are expected to release additional updates following the autopsy results and completion of the investigation. At this time, no further information has been made available about what led officers to serve a search warrant on the property or what charges Jones may have been facing.

The Dillon County Coroner’s Office continues to assist in the investigation by providing support in determining the exact medical cause of death, while SLED and Florence County Sheriff’s Office are leading the legal and procedural review of the incident.
