Jeffrey Wirt Newman Obituary, Death – A fatal motorcycle accident on Thursday in Eastland County has claimed the life of 72-year-old Jeffrey Wirt Newman, an Abilene man. According to a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) report released Friday, Newman was riding his 2017 Kawasaki Concours 14 northbound on State Highway 6 when the crash occurred.

The accident happened in the late afternoon, approximately 0.4 miles south of Eastland. Preliminary findings from the DPS investigation suggest that Newman struck a construction barrel positioned on the shoulder of the highway. The impact caused him to be thrown from his motorcycle. Despite wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Newman suffered fatal injuries.

Local authorities were quick to respond to the scene of the crash. Eastland County Justice of the Peace Jon Glenn officially pronounced Newman dead at 4:19 p.m. on Thursday. Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Michael N. West, assisted by another trooper and a sergeant from the Eastland area, conducted the investigation. The Eastland Police Department and Eastland County Sheriff’s Office also provided support for the ongoing inquiry into the incident.

At this time, it is unclear whether any additional factors contributed to the crash, but the investigation is ongoing.
