Upon arrival, officers discovered 20-year-old Jamele Newby-Gibson lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.
Following the incident, the Virginia Beach Police Department’s homicide unit launched an investigation. Through swift police work, detectives identified 19-year-old Nashaun Reid, also of Virginia Beach, as the primary suspect in the case. Within six hours of the shooting, Reid was located, arrested, and charged with second-degree murder. He also faces an additional charge for using a firearm during the commission of a felony.
In a public statement, Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate praised the quick action and effectiveness of both the responding officers and detectives who handled the investigation. “I have to commend the work of our first responding zone officers and our detectives who diligently worked this case from the onset and were able to identify, apprehend and charge the suspect in this offense within six hours from the time of the incident,” said Neudigate. “To be able to remove a dangerous individual from our community and bring closure to a grieving family in such a short period speaks volumes to their dedication and professionalism.”
