Jacob Allen Rose Obituary, Death: Gilbert police ID shooting victim; family speaks out

Jacob Allen Rose Obituary, Death – A man shot and killed by police in Gilbert has been identified as 24-year-old Jacob Allen Rose. The incident occurred during a welfare check and has since sparked strong reactions from Rose’s family, who have expressed frustration over how the situation has been handled by authorities.

According to the Gilbert Police Department, officers were called to the scene around 6 p.m. on June 11. The report indicated that a man was seen slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle parked in the eastbound lanes of Guadalupe Road near Lindsay Road. Officers arrived and attempted to wake the man, later identified as Rose, by knocking on the car window.

Police say that once Rose awoke, he stepped out of the vehicle but soon reached for a firearm and aimed it at officers. In response, officers opened fire. According to authorities, Rose then attempted to escape while still armed, driving his vehicle into several Gilbert police patrol cars during the incident.

The Gilbert Police Department officially identified Rose as the deceased the following day, June 12.

In response to the shooting, Rose’s family released a statement through their attorney, Stacy Scheff, on June 13. The family said they are devastated by the loss and deeply troubled by what they describe as inadequate communication from the police department following the deadly event.

In the written statement, Scheff criticized the Gilbert Police Department for failing to provide the family with a written report or any direct communication about the circumstances surrounding Rose’s death. The family stated that they have not been contacted by the department’s chaplain or victims’ services personnel and have had to rely on news media for updates on the case.

“The GPD’s silence speaks volumes about what transpired in the moments leading to their officers shooting and killing Jacob,” Scheff wrote. The family claims that the lack of transparency raises serious questions about the police’s actions and the events that led up to the fatal shooting.

At the center of the controversy is the moment when police allege that Rose pointed a weapon at them, which prompted the officers to use deadly force. While the police maintain that their response was necessary to protect their own safety, Rose’s family is seeking more information and accountability.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the Gilbert Police Department has not released body camera footage or additional details beyond the initial statement. The department has also not issued any response to the family’s claims of inadequate communication.

As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with another case involving the use of deadly force by law enforcement, while Rose’s family mourns their loss and calls for greater transparency and justice.
