J.W. Bode Obituary, Death Cause; 72-year-old public safety officer ID’d as victim in fatal Enid hospital shooting

J.W. Bode Obituary, Death Cause – On Sunday night, tragedy struck in Enid, Oklahoma, when a longtime public safety officer was killed during a shooting inside a local hospital. Officials with Integris Health confirmed that the victim was 72-year-old J.W. Bode, a hospital security guard and retired probation and parole officer who had dedicated his life to protecting others.

According to investigators with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), the incident began as a domestic-related call that later escalated. Authorities reported that the suspect’s vehicle was found near the Integris Health Center on Owen K. Garriott Road, close to Van Buren Street, around 11 p.m. As officers approached the scene, the suspect began firing at police, hitting one of their patrol cars. From there, the suspect moved into the hospital and continued shooting.

Inside the building, law enforcement discovered Bode, who had been fatally shot while performing his duties. Investigators stated that Bode confronted the armed suspect in an effort to protect others in the hospital. Officers eventually located the suspect, and during the confrontation, police shot and killed him. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released by authorities.

In a statement, Integris Health expressed deep sorrow over Bode’s death, emphasizing his courage and selflessness during the violent ordeal. The hospital described him as someone who gave his life in service to others, dying in the line of duty as he tried to shield patients, staff, and visitors from harm. “It is with great sadness that we share that one of the individuals killed in the overnight shooting incident in our Enid hospital was one of our own. Public Safety Officer J.W. Bode was killed as he bravely approached the suspect. He died protecting others,” the statement read.

Hospital officials praised Bode’s heroism, saying his quick actions prevented further tragedy. They also extended their appreciation to local and state law enforcement for their fast response, which helped secure the hospital and ensure the safety of those inside. Counseling and chaplain services have been made available for hospital staff and physicians coping with the traumatic event.

Bode’s life of service stretched well beyond his time with Integris Health. Before joining the hospital as a security officer, he had a long career as a probation and parole officer, devoting decades to public safety. Integris Health described him as a proud father of three and a loving grandfather, remembered not only for his professional dedication but also for his devotion to family.

Community members and colleagues have been left grieving the sudden and violent loss. Many view Bode’s death as a stark reminder of the risks faced by those who dedicate their lives to public service and protection. His actions on Sunday night, they said, reflected his lifelong commitment to safeguarding others, even at the cost of his own life.

As investigations continue into the incident and the suspect’s motives, Bode is being honored as a hero whose sacrifice will not be forgotten. His death marks a somber moment for Enid and for all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of service, courage, and devotion to both family and community.
