Zaibel, a 54-year-old from Brewster, was behind the wheel of a 2021 Kia Sportage when the fatal collision occurred on Tuesday, around 5:15 a.m.

According to the New York State Police, Zaibel’s vehicle was traveling southbound on I-684 when, for reasons that are still under investigation, his car veered off the road. The vehicle then crashed into a parked 1995 International Harvester tractor-trailer that was located just south of the Bedford rest area. The tractor-trailer had been stationary at the time of the incident.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and Zaibel was transported to Northern Westchester Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The cause of why Zaibel’s vehicle left the road remains unclear, and an investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing.
