According to the West Valley City Police Department, the shooting began when a 16-year-old suspect, who has not been publicly identified due to his age, opened fire in what officials described as a targeted attack. Lugundi appeared to be the intended target, while Reena and the baby were caught in the crossfire and shot unintentionally. The child has not been named, and authorities have confirmed that the infant was not related to Reena.

The teen suspect was apprehended at the scene shortly after the shooting. One police officer discharged their weapon during the incident, but no additional injuries were reported from that exchange, and the suspect was not struck by the officer’s gunfire.

Authorities said that Lugundi was involved in a prior altercation or conflict that led to the attack. Reena and the baby, however, were innocent bystanders who tragically lost their lives as a result of the gunfire. Their presence at the festival was unrelated to the dispute that erupted in violence.

In addition to the three people killed, two others sustained injuries. Among them was a pregnant woman who was hurt while trying to flee the area in the chaos following the shooting. Police did not specify the severity of her injuries but confirmed she was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The shooting sent shockwaves through the local community and disrupted what was meant to be a family-friendly festival. WestFest, an annual event held in Centennial Park, typically attracts large crowds with food, entertainment, and community activities. This year’s festivities were marred by gun violence that turned a celebratory evening into a tragedy.
