Authorities reported that the OSHP cruiser was traveling southbound on Route 104 when the Chevrolet Silverado crossed the center line and collided head-on with the patrol vehicle. Both vehicles subsequently veered off the roadway. The Chevrolet caught fire following the impact, further complicating the emergency response.
The driver of the Silverado was identified as 45-year-old Harold Smith Jr. of Circleville. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the collision. A passenger in the vehicle, 29-year-old Amber Aills of Chillicothe, was transported to Adena Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Despite medical efforts, Aills later died at the hospital, bringing the total fatalities from the crash to two.
The state trooper involved in the collision was also transported to Adena Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries that were reported as non-life-threatening. Following initial care, the trooper was transferred to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment. Authorities have not disclosed the trooper’s name, citing standard OSHP procedure.
OSHP officials confirmed that the Chevrolet Silverado’s movement into the southbound lane was a primary factor in causing the head-on collision. Both vehicles leaving the roadway indicates the severity of the crash and the force of the impact.
