Taylor Hendershot Obituary, Death: Woman fatally shot outside Indiana liquor store; suspect charged with murder.

Taylor Hendershot Obituary, Death – A man from southwestern Indiana has been arrested and charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a woman outside a liquor store on Tuesday afternoon. According to a statement from the Vincennes Police Department, officers were dispatched to Cardinal’s Liquor Store at 2101 North 6th Street in Vincennes around 12:56 p.m. on August 5 in response to a report of gunfire. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered 30-year-old Taylor Hendershot with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers administered first aid until emergency medical services arrived, but despite efforts to save her, Hendershot was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators quickly identified 32-year-old Dylan A. Smith, also of Vincennes, as the suspected shooter. Witnesses reported that Smith had fled the scene in a black SUV. A short time later, officers located a black Cadillac Escalade, believed to be the getaway vehicle, crashed about a block from the liquor store.

Further investigation led police to believe that Smith had taken shelter inside a home in the 800 block of Carbon Street—just one block from where the wrecked SUV was found. Officers learned that Smith had entered the residence without permission and was armed with a knife. The person living in the home was able to safely evacuate.

A tense standoff followed, lasting several hours as officers attempted to negotiate with Smith. Eventually, police deployed “less lethal” tactics to subdue and safely remove him from the house. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Following his arrest, Smith was formally charged by the Knox County Prosecutor’s Office with one count of murder. His initial court appearance took place on August 6 at 1:30 p.m. A jury trial has been tentatively scheduled for November 4 at 8:30 a.m.

The incident has shaken the local community, especially given the broad daylight nature of the shooting and the dramatic standoff that followed. Police have not yet released information on the motive behind the killing or the relationship, if any, between Smith and Hendershot.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case. They have not indicated whether additional charges may be filed or if any further individuals are involved. The police thanked the public for their cooperation during the manhunt and standoff, as well as the responding officers for handling the situation safely.

As the legal process moves forward, the community mourns the loss of Taylor Hendershot, while also hoping for justice to be served in what police describe as a tragic and violent crime.
