Gary Michael Johnson Obituary, Death: One killed in head-on crash on NC 268 in Wilkes County

Gary Michael Johnson Obituary, Death – A deadly car accident took place over the weekend in Wilkes County on North Carolina Highway 268, near Abtco Road, during rainy weather conditions. The crash occurred around 10 p.m. on Sunday when a Nissan Sentra, traveling westbound, veered across the centerline and collided head-on with an eastbound Toyota Tacoma. Authorities reported that the Nissan was driven by 74-year-old Gary Michael Johnson of North Wilkesboro. Tragically, Johnson died at the scene as a result of the collision.

Officials also confirmed that Johnson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the fatal outcome. In contrast, the driver of the Toyota Tacoma, identified as 18-year-old Easton Kinnedi Townsend from Ronda, was unharmed and did not require medical attention.

After conducting a preliminary investigation, officials stated that neither speed nor impairment played a role in the crash. The accident appears to have been caused by the Nissan drifting into oncoming traffic, possibly affected by the rainy road conditions.

Following the incident, NC 268 was closed in both directions for approximately two hours while law enforcement and emergency crews worked at the scene to investigate and clear the wreckage. The road has since been reopened to traffic.

Authorities have confirmed that no criminal charges will be filed in connection with the accident, as there was no evidence of reckless behavior or unlawful conduct.

This incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with driving in poor weather conditions, and the importance of wearing seatbelts at all times. The investigation has been officially closed.
