Ezequiel Urrutia, a 23-year-old Florida International University graduate, has been identified by family members as the driver killed in a wrong-way crash on the Turnpike Extension in Miramar. The tragic incident occurred on Thursday morning when a Honda Element, traveling in the wrong direction, collided head-on with Urrutia’s Honda Civic east of Red Road.
The force of the impact destroyed both vehicles and caused Urrutia’s Civic to roll over. Despite the extensive damage, the driver of the Honda Element survived and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Urrutia’s family described him as a dedicated and compassionate young man who aspired to save lives. The crash is being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol, which is working to understand the circumstances that led to the collision.
