Erick Francisco Vasquez Marroquin, Veronica Azucena Marroquin Chavez Obituary, Death – Two Carthage residents were killed in a crash on Interstate-49 in Jasper County Wednesday afternoon. The accident occurred around 3 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the interstate, approximately one mile north of Jasper. The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) reported that the crash involved a Ford F-250 pickup truck and a Toyota Corolla.
The victims, 33-year-old Erick Francisco Vasquez Marroquin and 27-year-old Veronica Azucena Marroquin Chavez, were passengers in the Corolla, which was struck from behind. According to MSHP, the crash occurred when the driver of the Corolla, who was reportedly falling asleep, slowed the vehicle down to almost a stop. In the meantime, the Ford F-250 rear-ended the Corolla, causing the fatal collision.
The driver of the Corolla and another passenger, also from Carthage, were taken to Mercy Hospital in Joplin with moderate injuries. The Jasper County Coroner, James Harrison, confirmed that the next of kin had been notified of the deaths.
Following a new policy by MSHP that took effect on November 1, the names of the other individuals involved in the crash are not being released. This policy prohibits the release of names listed on traffic crash reports.
