According to the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office, the accident involved a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta occupied by Ma and Ryan and a 2015 Ford Mustang. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that Ma and Ryan had stopped in the center median of the highway near Carmen Drive before the crash occurred. At approximately 3 a.m., the Mustang, driven by a 19-year-old man from Santa Barbara, slammed into the rear of their Jetta, causing it to burst into flames.
The impact of the crash proved fatal for both men in the Jetta. The medical examiner’s report determined that Ma died from blunt-force head and chest injuries, while Ryan succumbed to a combination of inhalation of combustion products and severe burns. Their deaths were classified as accidental.
The driver of the Mustang, whose name has not been released, survived the crash. However, details regarding his condition or whether any charges may be filed have not been disclosed as the CHP continues its investigation into the circumstances leading up to the collision.
The crash forced the temporary closure of all northbound lanes of Highway 101 near Carmen Drive for approximately four hours while authorities conducted their initial investigation and cleared the wreckage from the roadway.

A representative from Pacific View Mortuary & Memorial Park confirmed that his obituary page has been created and will be updated with details regarding the service by the end of Monday. According to the obituary, Ryan was originally from Redding, California.
