Coon’s mother, Tashia Porter, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of her son. “To lose a child, it’s nothing I would wish on anyone,” she said. Coon had only relocated to Miami a few months prior but had recently returned to Detroit for a visit. During that trip, he spent time with his two children and other relatives. After heading back to Florida last week, all communication with him suddenly ceased.

Porter said she typically spoke to her son several times a day, and his silence raised immediate concerns. “When he didn’t call, I knew something was wrong,” she explained. As worry grew, the family filed a missing persons report. Their worst fears were confirmed when Miami police identified Coon’s body on Sunday.

The second victim has been identified as 35-year-old Charlotte Rodriguez, who had been reported missing in New York around the same time. Police believe that Coon and Rodriguez had met in Miami and were likely out on a date. The last known image of Coon, his mother said, showed him sitting at a restaurant table.

Authorities are now working to uncover more details about the case. Officer Michael Vega of the Miami Police Department confirmed that both victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Detectives are currently reviewing video footage from nearby locations in an attempt to reconstruct what happened and identify possible suspects.

Porter and her family not only mourn the loss of Coon but also feel compassion for Rodriguez’s loved ones, who are enduring a similar pain. Coon was known for his commitment to health and fitness, his role as a youth football coach, and most importantly, his devotion to his children.

The tragedy has deeply impacted Coon’s children. His seven-year-old daughter doesn’t fully understand what has happened—she only knows that her father is no longer answering the phone. His son, slightly older and a young football player, is devastated. According to Porter, he hasn’t been eating and even skipped practice, where he was used to seeing his dad cheering him on.

As both families struggle to cope with their grief, many questions remain. “Why would someone take my son’s life?” Porter asked. “He was a good person.” The investigation is still active as detectives search for answers.

Darius Coon will be laid to rest in Detroit on what would have been his 32nd birthday, August 7. His family hopes justice will be served, and that they’ll eventually get the answers they desperately need.
