CINCINNATI, Mt. Washington shooting leaves 2 dead, 2 injured, rattling community

CINCINNATI — A quiet Sunday afternoon in Mt. Washington turned tragic when gunfire erupted, leaving two people dead and two others critically injured. Cincinnati police say the incident unfolded around 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Beacon Street and Glade Avenue, shaking a neighborhood that residents describe as normally peaceful and family-oriented.

According to investigators, the shooting began at an apartment building where a series of gunshots were fired both inside and outside the residence. Two victims were killed in the attack, while two others were rushed to the UC Medical Center in critical condition. Police revealed that one of the wounded individuals was the shooter, who allegedly opened fire on three others before turning the gun on themselves in an attempt to take their own life.

At this stage, authorities have not released the names of either the shooter or the victims, as next-of-kin notifications and further investigation are still underway.

Neighbors who had been enjoying the extended Labor Day weekend were jolted by the sound of gunfire. Brandon Reynolds, who lives nearby, initially mistook the noise for fireworks or holiday preparations. “I heard some booms, and then a few more shots,” Reynolds recalled. “Next thing I knew, there were police cars flooding the street.”

Officers who were patrolling close to the area reported hearing the gunfire and quickly responded, arriving while the shooting was still ongoing. Their swift action helped secure the scene and prevent further harm.

Cincinnati Police Lt. Jonathan Cunningham called the event a devastating blow to the community. “This is truly a tragedy today,” Cunningham said. “The pain is being felt not only by those directly involved but also by our officers and the residents of this community. It’s very sad.”

For longtime residents, the violence was especially unsettling. Jerry Corbett, who has lived in Mt. Washington for nearly 40 years, said he could not recall another mass shooting in the area. “This is the first multiple shooting I can remember happening here,” he remarked, reflecting the shock felt by many.

The close-knit nature of the community was evident in the aftermath. Reynolds said he immediately called neighbors to check on their safety, including Tiffany Bush, who lives nearby. “In Mt. Washington, especially here on Beacon and Ambar, we’re all like family. As soon as it happened, everyone started calling each other to make sure we were okay,” he said.

Bush, who worries about the neighborhood’s many children and frequent walkers, said the shooting has left residents shaken. “It’s very concerning to know something like this could happen so close to home,” she explained. “We have such a tight community, and this feels so out of place.”

Police confirmed that the investigation remains active as detectives work to piece together what led up to the violence. They are gathering evidence from the scene, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing the sequence of events.

While answers may take time, the immediate reality for Mt. Washington is one of grief and disbelief. A neighborhood known for its quiet streets and sense of togetherness now finds itself grappling with the aftermath of a sudden act of violence that has changed it forever.
