Anthony R. Virginia Obituary, Death – The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man fatally shot by Milwaukee police over the weekend as 41-year-old Anthony R. Virginia.
Virginia died Saturday afternoon at Froedtert Hospital following an officer-involved shooting. The incident began just after 3:15 p.m. when Milwaukee police were called to investigate a reported break-in near 32nd Street and Lancaster Avenue. The initial caller stated that one of the suspects had fired a gun in their direction.
When officers arrived, they located the two suspects near 37th Street and Fairmount Avenue. Police approached one of the men, later identified as Virginia, who was armed. Officers gave multiple commands for him to drop his weapon.
According to authorities, an officer then discharged his firearm, striking Virginia. A gun was found next to him at the scene. However, police have not confirmed whether Virginia fired at officers or what specifically led the officer to open fire.
The second suspect, a 34-year-old man, was taken into custody. It remains unclear whether he was armed at the time of the arrest.
The officer who fired his weapon is a 43-year-old veteran of the Milwaukee Police Department with more than a decade of service. Following standard protocol, he has been placed on administrative duty while the case is under review.
The Wauwatosa Police Department has taken over the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
