Anthony Egeonu obituary, Death: Family mourns security guard fatally shot while confronting shoplifters at Dallas CVS.
Anthony Egeonu obituary, Death – The family of Anthony Egeonu, a security guard tragically shot and killed while confronting shoplifters at a downtown Dallas CVS, is grappling with deep sorrow and emotional pain.
His children, Amari and Jayda, are heartbroken, unable to comprehend the loss of their father. Amari expressed the overwhelming feeling of loss, saying tearfully, “I feel terrible. I feel frustrated. I will always be bruised from this situation because my dad is no longer here.” Jayda echoed her sentiments, stating, “He’s not coming home.”
Anthony Egeonu had worked as a security guard at the CVS on Main Street, a location known for its high crime rates. Neighbors in the area have also expressed concern about the ongoing issues of theft and violence that have plagued the neighborhood. Despite these challenges, the Egeonu family is now faced with the devastating reality of losing a beloved family member in a senseless act of violence.
Within less than 24 hours of the shooting, two young suspects were apprehended. Dallas police have not publicly identified the suspects due to their ages. The swift arrest, however, does little to bring comfort to a family torn apart by grief.
Gwendolyn Pipkins, Anthony’s mother, is struggling to understand the senselessness of the crime. “To go to work, do what you’re supposed to be doing … another person that doesn’t value life to take another life, I can’t wrap my mind around it,” she said, her voice filled with anguish. She added, “They made a choice to leave us hurting, grieving, and in pain, never ever to lay eyes on a person we love very much.”
Octavia Egeonu, Anthony’s wife, shared that while the family understood the dangers associated with Anthony’s job as a security guard, he had always been passionate about law enforcement. Despite the risks, he was dedicated to his work and had hoped for a promotion that would allow him to supervise at a different location. “He stayed because he was getting ready to be promoted to where he wouldn’t even be in that store. He would have been supervising at a different location,” Octavia said.
Surrounded by her family and friends, Octavia spoke quietly about their faith, which she said would help guide them through this heartbreaking time. “This family is wounded, but we are going to make it through because we serve a savior who’s already conquered,” she said, holding onto the belief that they would find closure through their faith.
For Gwendolyn Pipkins, the pain is even more profound, as Anthony is the second son she has lost to violence. “It tells me in the word of God that when I say that I’m weak, I can say that I’m strong because God carries me when I can’t carry myself. And right now, I’m not carrying myself. I know God is carrying me,” she shared. Despite her immense grief, she remains hopeful for justice, stating, “I will see justice. I know that the Lord is not going to allow us not to have justice.”
Anthony Egeonu’s death has left a void in the hearts of his family. He is survived by his wife, Octavia, and their children—Jayda, Amari, and Jace—as well as his parents, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, all of whom are mourning his loss. His family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help support his wife and children during this difficult period, assisting with their living expenses and ensuring they are cared for as they cope with the loss.
This tragedy has highlighted the harsh realities that security guards often face while performing their duties, and the Egeonu family’s grief serves as a stark reminder of the need for safety and justice. As they navigate the aftermath of this devastating loss, they continue to hold onto the hope that justice will be served, and that the memory of Anthony will live on through their strength, faith, and love for him.
