Andrew Canepa Obituary, Death – A Southern California official has confirmed the identity of one of the victims killed in the recent mass shooting at a Reno resort. On Tuesday, Ventura County Supervisor Jeff Gorell announced that Andrew Canepa, a co-owner of the Side Street Café in Newbury Park, was one of the three people who lost their lives in the attack.
Gorell shared the news on Facebook, describing Canepa as a compassionate individual and dedicated business owner. He highlighted Canepa’s role as a loving father to his young son and expressed sorrow over the loss. “Andrew was a kind soul, a dedicated business owner, and a loving father,” Gorell wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the Side Street Café community during this incredibly difficult time. We will miss seeing his warm presence at the restaurant and are deeply saddened by this loss.”
One of Canepa’s friends, identified only as Rick, expressed his disbelief and heartbreak over the tragedy during an interview with KABC. He described Canepa as “one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet” — someone who was always friendly, cheerful, and actively involved in the local community. Rick emphasized Canepa’s welcoming nature and his ongoing support of those around him.
Canepa is the first of the three deceased victims to be publicly identified. Authorities have not released the names, genders, or ages of the other victims involved in the incident. Three additional people were injured during the shooting, and two of them remain in critical condition.
The shooting occurred on Monday night in the parking lot of the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada. According to the Sparks Police Department, the gunman opened fire into a crowd gathered outside the resort. Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies quickly responded to the scene and arrived within three minutes of the initial report. Upon arrival, they located the gunman and engaged in a confrontation, which resulted in the shooter being wounded by police gunfire.
The suspect, whose name has not yet been disclosed, was transported to the hospital and is currently in critical condition.
Authorities say the motive behind the shooting is still unclear. However, based on the preliminary investigation, officials do not believe the shooter had any prior connection to the individuals he targeted. Law enforcement continues to investigate the incident and is working to gather more information about the events that led up to the deadly encounter.
