Amaiyah Sumlin Obituary, Death – The Birmingham Police Department has arrested a suspect in connection to the tragic death of a 23-year-old woman, Amaiyah Sumlin, who was shot on April 6. Authorities responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 6:18 a.m. in the 2800 block of Riverview Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered Sumlin suffering from a gunshot wound. She was immediately transported to UAB Hospital, where her injuries were deemed life-threatening.

The suspect, 22-year-old Ivry Jelks, initially fled the scene after the shooting but later voluntarily turned himself in to the Birmingham Police Department (BPD) Headquarters. Following his surrender, Jelks was placed on a 48-hour felony extension at the Birmingham City Jail. On Monday, the BPD issued an attempted murder warrant for Jelks. Tragically, Sumlin succumbed to her injuries and passed away on Saturday, prompting the BPD to consider upgrading the charges against Jelks in the ongoing investigation.

Currently, Jelks is in custody at the Shelby County Jail. The BPD has stated that further charges related to the homicide will be filed, and the investigation continues.
