The incident occurred at approximately 3:21 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day in the 4000 block of West Monroe Street in the Garfield Park neighborhood. According to authorities, gunfire shattered the front window of a second-floor apartment, striking 62-year-old Ignacio Mendiola in the head.
Mendiola was rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition, but on Sunday, police announced he had succumbed to his injuries. On Friday, officers arrested Gad Hughes, 29, in the 200 block of West Garfield Boulevard. Hughes, a resident of Cicero, Illinois, now faces a felony charge of first-degree murder. He has also been charged with a felony count of heroin possession.
The case remains under investigation as authorities piece together the events leading to this senseless act of violence.
