According to the FBI, agents from the Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force were conducting a search at Gosch’s residence as part of their investigation. Federal authorities reported that Gosch was armed when agents knocked on the door, leading to the fatal encounter. After being shot, Gosch was pronounced dead at the scene.

The FBI clarified on Tuesday that Gosch was not involved in a sex trafficking investigation, countering earlier claims from some media outlets. However, the agency has not disclosed the nature of the investigation or the reason for the search warrant at his home.

Details surrounding the shooting remain limited. The FBI has not specified the type of weapon Gosch was allegedly armed with or his actions leading up to the shooting. Gosch’s death marked the 138th homicide in Kansas City in 2024, according to data maintained by The Kansas City Star, which includes fatal police-involved shootings. Comparatively, by this time in 2023, the city had recorded 171 homicides.
