Teenager Killed and Two Seriously Injured in Sampson County Collision
Esmeralda Salas Obituary, Death – A tragic car crash in Sampson County on Sunday night left one person dead and two others seriously injured. Authorities responded to the scene just before 9 p.m. after receiving reports of the collision involving two vehicles at an intersection.
The accident occurred when a 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by 19-year-old Daniel Velazquez, failed to stop at a posted stop sign. Velazquez’s westbound vehicle collided with a 2009 Honda passenger car traveling south, driven by Anthony Williams.
The impact caused the Tahoe to veer off the roadway, where it overturned multiple times. During the rollover, an unrestrained passenger in the rear of the vehicle, identified as 19-year-old Esmeralda Salas, was ejected. Tragically, Salas was pronounced dead at the scene.
Velazquez’s vehicle eventually came to rest upside down in a field, facing south, while Williams’ vehicle ended up on the eastbound shoulder in an uncontrolled stop. Both Velazquez and Williams sustained serious injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Investigators have identified reckless driving as a key contributing factor in the crash. However, they do not believe alcohol played a role. The circumstances surrounding the collision highlight the critical importance of obeying traffic signals and using seat belts.
The death of Esmeralda Salas marks a devastating loss for her loved ones, while Velazquez and Williams continue to recover from their injuries. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by disregarding traffic laws and the tragic consequences that can result.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution, avoid reckless behavior, and prioritize safety to prevent similar tragedies.
