Mary Sumara Obituary, Death: Elderly Woman in Wheelchair Killed in Snowy I-65 Crash

Mary Sumara Obituary, Death – An elderly woman in a wheelchair tragically lost her life in a crash on Thursday morning in Northwest Indiana, amid heavy snow that reduced visibility on Interstate 65. The incident occurred around 11:35 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-65 near mile marker 228, roughly two miles south of the Demotte/Roselawn exit.

According to police, a white Chevy Trailblazer was traveling north when the driver failed to notice that traffic ahead had slowed due to blowing snow. The driver of the Trailblazer rear-ended a Toyota Sienna, and the force of the collision caused the Sienna to be pushed into the back of a semi-truck.

Mary Sumara, 77, from Demotte, was sitting in a wheelchair in the back of the Toyota Sienna at the time of the crash. Unfortunately, she died as a result of the impact.

The driver of the Chevy Trailblazer and a one-year-old passenger were transported to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Fortunately, the driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and the snow-related poor visibility is believed to have contributed to the accident.
