Devon Highbaugh Obituary, Death: Indy man identified in fatal shooting at his east side home
Devon Highbaugh Obituary, Death – A man was fatally shot early Wednesday morning at his home on Indianapolis’s east side. Authorities responded to the scene just before 1 a.m. on Hiner Lane, near Shadeland Avenue, where they found 32-year-old Devon Highbaugh shot inside his residence. Despite efforts to help, Highbaugh was pronounced dead at the scene.
As of the morning following the incident, the motive behind the shooting remained unclear. IMPD Captain Don Weilhammer confirmed that the home and the victim appeared to have been targeted, but the reasons for the attack were unknown.
Neighbors, however, speculated that drug activity might have been involved, given their suspicions about what had been happening at the residence. Court records also showed that Highbaugh was set to be sentenced next week for pleading guilty to drug-related charges in Hamilton County. Nevertheless, authorities have stated that it is too soon to definitively link drugs to the murder.
The shooting has shocked the neighborhood, which had been relatively peaceful. This area, located just north of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s East District headquarters, had not experienced any other deadly violence in 2024 before this incident. IMPD Sgt. William Young remarked on the quiet nature of the neighborhood, expressing hope that authorities would swiftly solve the case.
Witnesses at the scene, who were reportedly inside the home at the time of the shooting, were questioned by police but later released. Despite this, investigators emphasized the need for public assistance in solving the crime. Sgt. Young made it clear that the department cannot tackle violent crime alone and called on the community to help hold the perpetrator accountable.
IMPD is encouraging anyone with information related to the incident to reach out to Detective Katie Gourley at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or by email at Katie.Gourley@indy.gov. Tipsters can also contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477 to remain anonymous.
