Howard Zaibel Obituary, Death: Brewster man dies in I-684 crash in Northern Westchester

Howard Zaibel Obituary, Death – A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday morning when a Brewster man was killed instantly after crashing into the rear of a tractor-trailer on Route 684 in northern Westchester. The victim, identified as 54-year-old Howard Zaibel, was driving a Kia when the collision took place near the Bedford rest stop.

According to the New York State Police, the incident occurred around 5:15 a.m. when Zaibel’s vehicle veered off the roadway for reasons that remain unclear. His Kia struck the rear of an International Harvester trailer truck that was parked on the westbound shoulder of the southbound lanes. The truck, which was being operated by a driver from out of state, had been parked south of the rest stop at the time of the crash. The truck driver was not injured in the incident.

The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in Zaibel’s immediate death. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of why Zaibel’s car left the road and crashed into the truck, and the investigation is ongoing.

The tragic crash caused significant traffic delays during the morning rush hour as police and emergency crews worked at the scene. The investigation led to a backup of traffic that stretched for miles, with many commuters facing lengthy delays. Several residents of Putnam County, who were traveling on Route 684 to White Plains, reported that what would typically be a 45-minute trip turned into more than two hours of travel time due to the crash and the ongoing investigation.

As of now, the cause of the accident remains under investigation, and further details are expected to be released once authorities have more information.
