Keith Edelin Obituary, Death: Father found dead in Illinois woods identified as ambush victim.
Keith Edelin Obituary, Death – Authorities have identified both a Haddon Township police officer and the man he fatally shot during an incident on November 3, which is still under investigation. The incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. when officers responded to a reported burglary at an apartment complex on West Crystal Lake Avenue in Haddon Township.
Upon arriving at the scene, Officer Luke Falkenberg and another officer encountered 46-year-old Keith Edelin of Pennsauken in a stairwell of the building. Edelin was reportedly holding a knife at the time, according to the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General (OAG), which is handling the investigation.
During their interaction in the stairwell, Falkenberg shot Edelin with his service weapon. Officers provided immediate aid before emergency responders transported Edelin to Cooper University Hospital in Camden. Tragically, Edelin was pronounced dead at the hospital about an hour later.
Details surrounding the specific circumstances of the interaction between Edelin and the officers prior to the shooting have not been disclosed. Authorities confirmed that no one else was injured, and a knife was recovered from the scene.
As per state law, the OAG is conducting a thorough investigation into the death, which is required for all incidents where individuals die during encounters with law enforcement. A grand jury will review the findings of the investigation to determine whether any officers should face charges related to the incident.
