Paul Jacques Obituary, Death – A wrong-way driver caused a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 during Thursday evening’s rush hour, leading to one fatality and multiple injuries, authorities reported.
The crash occurred around 5 p.m. on I-35 between the east mixmaster and SE Corporate Woods Drive in Ankeny, Iowa. According to the Iowa State Patrol, 91-year-old Paul Jacques of Burnsville, Minnesota, was driving northbound in the southbound lanes when his Chevrolet Impala collided with a Toyota Highlander. The collision caused the Highlander to crash into a Toyota Sequoia. A fourth vehicle, a Saturn Vue, was also involved when its driver swerved to avoid the oncoming vehicle but ended up crashing.
Jacques was killed in the crash. The driver of the Highlander was injured and was transported to a Des Moines hospital for treatment. Additionally, two other individuals sustained serious injuries in the incident, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The crash contributes to the state’s rising road fatality count. As of the latest data, 298 people have died on Iowa roads this year, a decrease of 15 compared to the same time last year. Over the past five years, Iowa has averaged 350 road fatalities annually.
