Tracy Willis Obituary, Death – A 65-year-old man who lost his life in a freeway crash in Claremont has been officially identified by authorities. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the victim as Tracy Willis, who died following a collision on the Foothill (210) Freeway over the weekend.
The accident took place around 8 a.m. on Saturday, along the eastbound side of the freeway just west of Monte Vista Avenue, according to details provided by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Investigators said the sequence of events began when a brown Mini Cooper became disabled and was left stopped, unoccupied, on the right shoulder of the road.
For reasons still under review, a white Ford Focus sedan, which Willis was driving, drifted out of its travel lane and onto the shoulder. The Focus then struck the rear of the stationary Mini Cooper, leading to a serious impact. CHP officials explained that the Mini Cooper had not been occupied at the time of the crash, and the vehicle was simply sitting idle on the shoulder.
Emergency crews were dispatched quickly after the collision. Willis, who suffered severe injuries during the crash, was transported by paramedics to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Despite those efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the facility at 8:25 a.m., only minutes after the initial collision occurred.
The crash prompted immediate traffic disruptions along the busy freeway. CHP issued a Sigalert at 8:26 a.m., closing the third and fourth lanes of the eastbound freeway so investigators and emergency crews could work safely at the scene. This closure lasted just over an hour, with officials reopening the affected lanes at approximately 9:35 a.m. once the roadway had been cleared and the initial investigation completed.
Authorities have not released further details regarding what may have caused Willis’s vehicle to drift onto the shoulder, nor whether impairment, distraction, or another factor played a role. The CHP has said the investigation remains ongoing as officers continue reviewing evidence and statements to determine the circumstances leading up to the deadly collision.
