Morgan L. Wakefield Obituary, Death – A deadly crash in Allen County Tuesday evening has left one man dead and several others injured, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP). The accident happened just after 5:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 169, about six miles south of Humboldt.

Authorities say the collision involved a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu and a 2018 Ram 1500 pickup truck. Investigators reported that the Malibu, driven by 29-year-old Morgan L. Wakefield of Mound City, was traveling northbound when it crossed the center line of the highway. The car collided head-on with the Ram pickup, driven by 52-year-old Shawn M. Petterborg of Stockton.

The impact of the crash was severe. Emergency crews arrived quickly but could not save Wakefield, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials also noted that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, a factor that may have contributed to the fatal outcome.

Petterborg, the driver of the pickup, sustained injuries and was transported by emergency medical services to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for further treatment. His current condition has not been disclosed.

Three passengers inside the Ram 1500 were also hurt in the crash. They were identified as 50-year-old Angie J. Hale, 31-year-old Caitlyn E. Hale, and a 9-year-old girl, all residents of Independence, Kansas. EMS transported the three to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center. While the extent of their injuries has not yet been released, officials confirmed that all survived the collision.

The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances that led Wakefield’s vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic. At this stage, authorities have not stated whether distraction, impairment, or fatigue may have played a role in the crash. The investigation will also review vehicle conditions and roadway factors.
