COLUMBUS, Ohio, Family Shooting Victim Identified in Homicide Case

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus police have officially identified the man who lost his life following a shooting involving family members over the weekend. Authorities reported that 24-year-old Is’shan Trowsdell died on Thursday after succumbing to injuries he sustained during the incident, which occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, August 24.
Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of East 1st Avenue shortly before 5 a.m. after reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found two adults suffering from gunshot wounds. Trowsdell was critically injured and rushed to the hospital in life-threatening condition, while the second victim, whose identity has not been released, was treated and later discharged.
Despite the tragic outcome, detectives have described the event as a “non-intentional shooting between family members,” suggesting the firearm discharge was accidental rather than the result of deliberate harm. This characterization sets the case apart from many other gun-related homicides in the area. Investigators emphasized that, at this stage, no charges have been filed against anyone involved. Instead, the matter will be thoroughly reviewed and presented to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of potential next steps.
The case remains active as detectives continue piecing together the circumstances that led to the shooting. Police are relying heavily on interviews and evidence gathered from the scene to understand how the incident unfolded. Though investigators are aware of the family ties between those involved, they have not released detailed information about the nature of the dispute or interaction that preceded the gunfire.
Community members who may have witnessed or heard anything connected to the shooting are urged to come forward. Police have provided several avenues for tips, encouraging anyone with information to contact Detective Yoder, the lead investigator, at (614) 645-2040. Additional contacts include the Columbus Division of Police Homicide Unit at (614) 645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at (614) 461-TIPS (8477). Detective Pribe is assisting Detective Yoder in handling the case.
The shooting highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in addressing violence involving firearms within homes and families. While many violent incidents are linked to conflicts between unrelated individuals, domestic or family-related shootings can be equally devastating, often leaving lasting emotional trauma for those close to the victims. Authorities are treating the case with care given the sensitive circumstances, especially since family relationships are at the center of the tragedy.
As the investigation continues, the Columbus community has been reminded of the importance of firearm safety and the potential consequences of mishandling weapons, particularly in homes where multiple people may be at risk. While the full details of what led to the shooting remain unclear, the loss of Trowsdell has left family members and friends mourning a life cut short in a moment that investigators say was not intended to be deadly.
The Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office is expected to determine whether criminal charges will result once all evidence is reviewed, but for now, the shooting is being considered a tragic accident within a family.
