Police explained that officers from the Seat Pleasant Police Department observed a vehicle that had been reported stolen on August 22. While officers began following the car, they did not activate their cruiser lights, and no pursuit was initiated.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the stolen vehicle accelerated northbound on Sheriff Road toward Martin Luther King Jr. Highway. During this movement, the driver ran a red light and collided with Canty’s vehicle, striking it on the side. The impact proved fatal for Canty, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A child who was a passenger in Canty’s car was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Fortunately, those injuries were not life-threatening, and the child is receiving medical care.

Authorities also reported that four juveniles were inside the stolen vehicle at the time of the crash. Three of these juveniles were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and remained under medical care as of Wednesday afternoon. One juvenile was taken into police custody.
