The Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed on Thursday that the victim was Fredrick Zilke, a longtime resident of the 8300 block of N. Newville Road.
The incident occurred late Saturday night, August 17, after emergency crews received reports of a structure fire. According to the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, the Lakeside Fire-Rescue Department and sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene around 10:02 p.m. after a passerby noticed flames coming from the home. Witnesses told authorities that fire was visible on the outside of the house and quickly spread to the roof, raising fears that someone might still be inside.
When dispatchers with Rock County’s 911 center attempted to reach Zilke during the emergency, there was no response. Deputies on scene soon believed that he was likely still inside the residence, trapped by the growing fire. Firefighters eventually located Zilke unresponsive in his second-floor bedroom. Despite efforts to remove him from the home, he was pronounced dead shortly after being brought outside early Sunday morning.
