Lopez-Fernandez Obituary, Death; DPS releases name of driver killed in Phoenix I-10 three-vehicle crash

Lopez-Fernandez Obituary, Death – The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) has identified the man who died in a three-vehicle collision on a busy Phoenix freeway this past weekend as 28-year-old Edgar Alberto Lopez-Fernandez from Eloy, Arizona. The crash occurred just after 3:15 p.m. on Saturday along the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near 24th Street.

According to DPS, Lopez-Fernandez was driving eastbound when he rear-ended a white Acura. After the initial impact, his vehicle then collided with the ventilation median wall and subsequently struck another car. The force of these collisions resulted in fatal injuries for Lopez-Fernandez.

Investigators believe that speed played a significant role in causing the crash. The exact details of how the accident unfolded remain under investigation, but speed was cited as a probable contributing factor.

As a result of the crash, the eastbound lanes of I-10 near 24th Street were closed for over four hours, causing significant traffic delays. Traffic was redirected off the freeway before reaching the Split, leading to congestion in the surrounding areas as motorists sought alternate routes.

Authorities urge drivers to exercise caution and maintain safe speeds, especially in high-traffic areas and on busy freeways like I-10. The investigation into the collision remains ongoing as DPS continues to gather more information about the events leading to the fatal crash.
